I’ve been playing around with the beta for the last month, and I’m a believer! Here’s a short list of what you can do on the new Hotmail for mobile:

微软亚洲研究院是微软公司在美国本土之外创建的第一个基础研究机构，而且现在已经是最大的一个海外研究院了，从它直接向总部研究院汇报这点上就可看出它的重要地位。通俗而言，微软亚洲研究院就像一个很大的计算机系，除了我们不搭台授课之外，其他的诸如科研活动、学术交流、人才培养、课程建设等方面的活动也是微软亚洲研究院的主流，跟学校的情况很相像。但是，有一点在职能上与高校计算机系明显不同的是，力求把研究成果和最新技术转化到微软产品中是我们工作中的一个重要内容，这也是企业研究院的特殊职责所决定的。

中国学生的创新能力是很强的，在微软亚洲研究院，我觉得它做的最好的就是创新。可能你们到了研究院就会发现，研究院有一个非常宽松的环境，和别的地方都不一样。员工是什么时候想来上班，就可以什么时候来上班，甚至有的员工白天不愿意来上班，他们晚上来上班。老板也不会叫你做什么事，你自己选择你要做的课题，你自己掌握项目进度。你的老板在那里不是管你的，而是在背后无形地支持你。比如说，假如我组里的人不来找我，我会很高兴，他不来找我的话，我也一定不会找他。如果他来找我的话，就说明他遇到问题了，那我就要坐下来和他一起解决问题。也许你听到这里会觉得研究员们都很懒散(笑)。

另一方面而言，研究员们也非常努力、非常用工，可以说是在忘我地进行工作。你可以会奇怪怎么这么一群人同时出现这两个方面的态度呢？一方面他们非常的懒散，另一方面他们又忘我地工作，这就是一个创新的基础研究机构所表现出来的特质。研究员们的心里装着很多的想法，如果有100个想法的话，可能99个是愚蠢的，而且是很难实现的，但是至少这些都是创新的想法。于是，经过一次次地把这些良莠不齐的想法进行筛选和论证，才最终诞生出一个有用的想法。

在微软亚洲研究院，你可以大胆地去做两件事。第一件事就是脑力激荡，大家可以在一起天南地北、海阔天空，就一个大家感兴趣的话题，从各个不同的方面使劲地去挖掘。第二件事就是可能有时候会因为过于激烈的讨论而争得面红耳赤。但是这点你大可不必担心，因为微软亚洲研究院有一个比较好的风气，就是即使两个人争得声嘶力竭，也不代表这两个人有什么个人的恩怨，正是因为大家的关系非常好，才乐于把自己真正的想法袒露出来，真的有很多的创意正是在这样的争论中激发出来的。

那么，当你经过了一段时间的研究之后，你的成果将会是怎么样的呢？它既可能是亚洲一流的，也可能是世界一流的。至于这项研究的影响如何，这就需要让同一个领域里做了同样事情的专家来评价了。比如说你是游100米蛙泳的，也许就会有游100米蛙泳的前世界冠军来评价你。微软亚洲研究院从建院以来，一直把在最顶级的学术会议和期刊上发表论文作为目标。我们从来不以论文发表数量为诉求，因此也杜绝滥发文章，坚决不写低水平的文章。一旦你向这些国际知名大会提交论文，就说明将会由你同行中最顶尖的专家来评审你的论文质量。评审的过程当中，最重要的一个考察要素就是创新性，当然还有一个要素就是这个研究是不是真的，有没有参假，是否有什么漏洞，这些也是需要检查的。比如说我自己的领域是计算机图形学，在计算机图形学当中只有一个顶级的会议称为国际图形学大会Siggraph，一般每年在美国洛杉矶开会，每年只接收八九十篇论文，有四五万人参加会议，从最近三年来看，我们分别有7篇、7篇、9篇被大会选中，大概占全部论文的9%左右，可见我们的研究员是完全可以做出世界一流的研究。

有不少人问过我：微软亚洲研究院为什么可以吸引人才，最重要的吸引力在哪里？我想要留人看三点，第一是事业留人，第二是金钱留人，第三是感情留人。归根结底，最重要的是事业留人。那么怎么样用事业留人呢？我觉得很重要的一点是不要让研究员觉得他的工作没有挑战。你要帮助他发现新的问题、新的挑战，让他总是充满挑战。

我觉得研究院在这方面现在做的还不够，甚至我会觉得永远做的都不够，敢冒的险还不够大。像我们现在虽然很多方面都取得了成功，但是我更希望做一些项目真的是大家费了很多劲、吃了很多苦，走了很多弯路，甚至取得了很大的挫败的。因为只有险冒得最大，对大家的挑战就会最大。也因为经历了巨大的失败，才会有巨大的突破，以及赢得巨大的成功。
